Ways to bring your flexible skills into focus
Doing whatever seems best at the time.

Flexibility is priceless for gardeners. We never really know when we plant something how well it will do. I have certainly had times when I planted something that had done well in previous years only to have it fail. This is where, if I crop fails, we have the flexibility to plant something else in its place, journal about what happened and keep on going.

Wait and see how bad it is while considering what else you could plant.

Being flexible allows you to have a wait-and-see approach when it comes to you garden. Sometimes this is the best course of action. It reminds me the “stink bug year”. The year we had so many stink bugs that at some point, we just gave up and waited to see the outcome of what seemed to be my most failed garden ever. Then in the fall, when cleaning up I found praying mantis egg case sacks. One – two – five- twenty - I stopped counting at 50! That was the year I knew my garden was finally balancing itself. Moving forward, we now have five praying mantis egg case sacks which is what the garden balanced out to, after that “stink bug year”.

Have no concern and assume you’ll get plants elsewhere.

Flexible gardeners have less concern that some other folks. You know you can get more seeds or plants.
An Flexible Cucumber Story
True confession – cucumbers are one of the hardest crops for me.It seems cucumber beetles love my garden. My friend Jean, who loves a mile and a half away has never seen a cucumber beetle in her garden – not for 40 years!
My years of cucumber growing has taught me to be flexible as a gardener and how flexible a crop cucumbers are.
If you have problems with bugs getting your cucumbers after having only gotten one round of harvest. Simply pull out the plants, compost your mulch and plant more. They germinate and grow quickly, so you can even start seedlings every two or three weeks to continually replant.
You can also grow them protected. I built a simple screened little structure to grow them and now grow parthenocarpic varieties mostly, that don’t need bees for pollination. These are hybrids, not GMOs!
There are other reasons cucumbers are a flexible crops. The are great for fresh eating and making various kinds of salads. You can pickle them, either the canning method or the fermentation method. And, those cukes that you didn’t see right away, those huge ones that got lost in the foliage, you can either juice them or save seeds from them.If you have more than one variety, the seeds may cross.
Did you know that cucumber juice is awesome and even freezes? If you find an oversized zucchini, you can juice together – yummy!
You have allot of flexibility growing cucumbers, so they suit you well as a flexible gardener.
