Ways to bring your reseouceful skills into focus

Because you are a resourceful gardener, you likely find things for your garden that others overlook.

You call your gardener friends to see if they will have extra seedlings.

Attend or organize a seed and/or plant swap.

You can also coordinate with a friend for ordering seed. My friend Jean and I forward each other seed sale emails. Then sometime in winter, we get together and compare what seeds we have. We see what one of us is out of, that the other could use. If we have seeds that won’t be viable soon, we split them to use them up.  We will make joint decisions on buying varieties that we can share. It is a fun way to catch up with a fellow gardening friend over a cup of tea and be resourceful at the same time.

Watch for seed company sales.

You can also engage in or create a tool-share with neighboring gardeners. This way no one buys every tool, but everyone gets to use a larger array of tools.

Reusing = Resourceful

Check yard sales and with organizing companies for used, but perfectly good tools and containers.

This is why I have created course and workshops with handouts, chart and worksheets for you to use.  They are great resources for the resourceful gardener.

You can also variety and price compare between different seed companies.

A Resourceful Bean Story

Whenever I am not sure what to put in a bed, in go beans, because I know the space will be well used. I tend to get pretty zealous to grow lots of beans.

In my climate, Virginia, zone 7, beans are the most reliable, easy to grow summer veggie.

So, I planted 10 kinds of beans.Mostly bush, but one pole. I like the faster harvest with bush beans.

A few years prior I had focused on dry beans and had so many I couldn’t use them all, either for cooking, replanting, or gifting friends, so this time I focused on beans for eating fresh. I wanted many kinds and to freeze and can a bunch for winter.

As summer went on I was harvesting so many beans I was giving away pounds every week. I couldn’t keep up.The cool thing was they ended up being a great trade resource.I had plenty of beans to trade for cucumbers, squash or varieties of tomatoes friends were growing that I was not.There were also a good trade for labor.My volunteers were oh so happy to help especially when they realized they would get a couple pounds of beans for a couple hours of work.

Beans are a good resource because there are so many types and kinds, the seeds are easy to save, easy to preserve and folks are happy to have your excess.
